Thilina a promising sportsman A High Jumper with much promise and who would go on setting new marks is Royalist Thilina Karunaratne. At the recently concluded Western Province athletic meet, 11 year old Thilina set up a new record clearing 1.35 metres. Not only is Thilina a talented High Jumper he is also showing his talents in rugby. In this game he plays for Royal and the Western Province. While he was showing his talents in track and field, his mater-in-charge at Reed House, Sumith Chandrasiri introduced him to rugby, where he immediately showed his prowess in the game. He is a regular in the WP fifteen. His athletic coach is Richard Sepala. In rugby he is in the competent care of the famous Summa Navaratnam and Colonel Malwatte. A lot more should be heard of Thilina in the future. He is the grandson of two great sports personalities of the sixties, James Perera and A.M. Sriya. James could quite rightly be called the father of gymnastics in Sri Lanka. He was a master performer when gymnastics enjoyed its best years in the 60s and 70s. James and his gymnasts were in great demand at that time and performed magnificently at many events. An old Benedictine he was a product of the great late George Atkinson. Thilina's grandmother was national High Jump champion A.M. Sriya. She represented the country and held the High Jump record for many years. She was also a eye catching gymnast. She was the first woman to take to this sport and was also its first lady coach. Thilina is the son of Aruna and Krishanthi Karunaratne. |
