Sri Lanka out to retain Asian Youth Netball Title

Sri Lanka will be hoping to retain the Asian Youth netball crown for the third successive year when the fourth Asian Youth championships gets underway on July 24 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium courts in Colombo.

The Lankans won the title in 1998 in India and produced a repeat performance in 2002 in Malaysia. This year the teams participating are India, Malaysia, Maldives, Singapore, Thailand and Sri Lanka. The theme of this years tournament is focusing on youth of today preparing to meet the future challenges and achieve the desired goals in life.

The main sponsors of the event are Development Lotteries Board, National Lotteries Board, National Savings Bank, People's Bank, Bank of Ceylon, Hotel Trans Asia and SriLankan Airlines. The co-sponsors are 141, Event Pro, Elephant House, Printel Limited, Water Mart and Molten Balls.

The opening ceremony will be held on July 24 at 2.30 p.m. under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Sports Sripathy Suriyarachchi and Mrs. Suriyarachchi. However the first match of the tournament between the hosts Sri Lanka and India will be played at 12.00 noon. The second match of the day between the last year runners up Malaysia and Thailand is schedule for 3.30 p.m followed by the clash between the 1994 champions Singapore and Maldives at 5.30 p.m.

Sri Lanka's second match will be against Thailand on July 25 at 2.30 p.m. This will be followed by the two matches between India v Maldives at 4.30 p.m. and Malaysia v Singapore at 6.15 p.m. Sri Lanka will then take on Maldives on July 26 at 2.30 p.m., Singapore on July 27 at 2.30 p.m. and Malaysia on July 28 at the same time.

The team that finish on top of the group after the preliminary round matches will meet the fourth placed team while the second placed team will confront the third placed team in the final round. In addition the fifth placed team will take on the sixth placed team on the same day.

The consolation final is schedule for July 30 at 2.00 p.m. and the final will be worked off at 4.30 p.m. under the patronage of Minister of Tourism Anura Bandaranaike.

The official launching ceremony and the commencement of the website of the tournament took place at the Trans Asia Hotel on Tuesday under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Sports Sripathy Suriyarachchi.
