Eight key public sector reform programmes to boost economy - Dr. Amunugama

Under the Government's new economic policy framework " Creating Our Future, Building Our Nation, it has undertaken eight key public sector reform programmes geared towards optimum growth of the country's economy, Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama disclosed yesterday.

The Minister yesterday told representatives of the international donor community to whom the Government's new Policy document was presented at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute that the new policy framework will be based on market friendly, export oriented strategies supported by a strong regulatory and legal framework.

Among the key reform initiatives are Public service, Public enterprise management, Legal and Regulatory framework , Financial Sector, Tax, Policy Coordination, improving public investments in education and rationalising the expenditure on defence.

The Minister also said that Government is currently in the process of drafting the new economic action plan taking into account of views of all political parties and trade union views will also be taken into consideration in the drafting of the action plan.

The economy will be built up through the complementary participation of a strong socially responsible private sector and a strong public sector, Minister added.

The Minister commenting on the observations made by the Japanese Ambassador said that irrespective of which political party was in power, the development projects initiated even during the previous regimes continues to date ensuring that development projects have a greater degree of continuity.

The Government will also try to achieve the target of one million tourists in a year during the truce where the current figure was hovering around 450,000.

Dr. P. B. Jayasundara, Secretary, Minister of Finanace, Mano Tittawella, Senior Advisor to the President, Jayantha Dhanapala, secreatry General Peace Secretariat and Lalith de Mel Senior Advisor, Ministry of Finance also spoke.
