Thamilselvan has denied responsibility for yesterday's assassination of Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) Pradeshya Sabha chairman, Velauthan Ravindran alias Kamalan (33), at Akkarapattu town. The EPDP frontliner was gunned down by two unidentified assailants at about 2.15 p.m. at the Akkarapattu bus terminal while engaged in shramadana work with other volunteers, including his wife and father. Akkarapattu police said they suspected the gunmen to be members of the LTTE pistol group. The two armed guards provided by the Sammanthurai police for his personal security could not act fast as the spot was crowded with more than 500 civilians and the assailants had escaped in their motorbike. They were conducting investigations and believed that the assailants were still on the run, the police said. He sustained gunshot injuries on the head and chest, they said, adding that he was shot with 9 mm pistols. The victim was chief organiser of the party for Ampara and chairman of the Alayadivembu PS. Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) spokesman, Kalli Liesinen, told the Daily News that the matter has been brought to their notice and they were in the process of conducting inquiries. As to 'what was behind and who was behind the killings' they could not comment, he said. Meanwhile, highly-placed EPDP sources in Colombo said that they strongly believed that the assailants were none other than LTTEers and they have taken up the matter with the government and the SLMM. |
