Police granted time to file plaint in roofing sheets scandal by Sarath Malalasekera Colombo Additional Magistrate Miss Amalee Ranaweera hearing the alleged galvanised roofing sheets fraud case against four suspects yesterday directed the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) to file a plaint against the suspects on August 28, 2004. Granting time to the Police to file a plaint, the Magistrate observed that the suspects should not be kept in remand unnecessarily. The Magistrate also directed the Police to obtain Attorney General's assistance in respect of the suspects who had made confessions before the Magistrate. The Magistrate further remanded the four suspects till August 3. They are the Kotte Municipal Councillor Anton Perera Jayasuriya, M.A. Mohamed Rizan of Grandpass, Mohamed Shiraz of Colombo 12 and Susantha Kumara of Colombo 14. SI R.M.A. Rajapaksa of the CCD filing a further report told court that the investigations into the case have completed and the dossier of the investigations forwarded to the Attorney General for his advice. Earlier State Counsel Damith Totawatta submitted to court that the investigators had made a request to the Attorney General to peruse the confessions made before the Magistrate by the three suspects in the case and advise them what action should be taken against them. Ajith Pathirana with Suraj Kongahagalage and Anoma Dharmapriya appeared for the second and third suspects while Priyankara Walawe appeared for the fourth suspect. Investigations into this alleged fraud of Rs. 20 million is being directed by CCD Director Senior SP Sarath Lugoda, assisted by ASP Palitha Fernando, Inspector Nuwan Wedasinghe, OIC, CCD, SI R.M.A. Rajapaksa and a team of officers of the CCD. |
