Editors' Guild perturbed by BASL President's address The Editors' Guild of Sri Lanka in a press release yesterday condemned certain remarks made by the President of the Bar Association (BASL), Ikaram Mohammed PC in his formal address at the Ceremonial sitting welcoming the new Court of Appeal Judge S. Sriskandarajah on July 13, as totally unsubstantial and a wholly unwarranted appeal to the Court of Appeal to punish journalists. The press said that in the course of the address the BASL President states, inter-alia,that courts must make appropriate measures to safeguard and maintain the independence of Judiciary and then went on to state that irresponsible and false reports against judicial officers have been published in the media. He invited the Court to invoke powers vested in the Court by Article 105 (3) of the Constitution to punish offending persons for Contempt of Court. The Guild is of the view that these views are the personal views of the BASL President and does not reflect those of the BASL. He has also failed to mention a single instance of such irresponsible and false reporting. The release further states that the deterioration of public confidence in the Independence of the Judiciary and in the judicial system and refers the BASL President to the recent study of the Marga Institute which concluded that the lawyers were themselves partly to blame for the erosion of public confidence. |
