Japanese assistance for agricultural development by Uditha Kumarasinghe The Japanese Government has pledged to provide technical expertise and resources to the Government to establish small-scale storerooms to preserve paddy and other crop varieties for a long period, Agriculture, Livestock and Lands Minister Anura Kumara Dissanayake told the Daily News. Japanese Ambassador Akio Suda who called on Agriculture, Livestock and Lands Minister Anura Kumara Dissanayake at his Ministry recently has agreed to extend the fullest cooperation of Japanese Government to set-up these storerooms. The Japanese Ambassador has told the Minister that he would discuss with the Japanese Government to immediately get the maximum support to establish these storerooms essential to preserve paddy and other crops. The Minister said the Japanese Ambassador pointed out that the Japanese Government had also stressed the importance of assisting the Government to renovate small and medium-scale tanks in Sri Lanka. The Ambassador has told the Minister that even though Japan was well developed technically, it is considered as an agricultural country. "Agriculture is the most essential factor to develop a country. Sri Lanka has natural and material resources for development. Therefore, Japan is fully committed to provide every assistance to the Government to develop the Sri Lankan agriculture sector." Minister Dissanayake told the Ambassador that Sri Lanka's food security is not satisfactory. A large amount of food is destroyed in the farmer to consumer distribution chain. The Ministry will formulate a system to overcome this situation and preserve foods. The Government has already taken remedial measures to develop agriculture. At present, the Agriculture Ministry is implementing these measures, the Minister pointed out. |
