Kandy Esala Perahera begins today

The Kandy Esala Perahera, Asia's most spectacular pageant will commence today with the first of the five Kumbal Peraheras.

The Perahera procession will assemble at the Sri Dalada Maligawa Square at 7.15 p.m. facing the East.

The procession will leave the Sri Dalada Maligawa square facing the East at 7.50 p.m. and proceed along the Lake round (Dalada Veediya Section only) and turn off into D. S. Senanayake Veediya, Pansala Road, Deva Veediya, Kings Street and return to the Dalada Maligawa Square.

Meanwhile, Indika Polkotuwa reports 6,000 police officers, of whom nearly 5,500 from the outstations have been deployed to provide security to the crowds expected to throng the hill capital during the Esala Perahera season, Kandy SSP E.M. Gunatilleke said.
