Australia, Lanka venture for Naval Officer training

Mercantile Marine Management Ltd., and TAFE Challenger, Western Australia's vocational training organisation have jointly set up a new training scheme for Navigational Deck Officers.

Mercantile Marien Management Ltd. presently manages about 800 seafarers for several international ship owners and runs its training facility called MSTI (Mercantile Seamen Training Institute) in Galle, MML was awarded the Lloyd's List Award for Excellence in Training Commitment in 2001.

TAFE Challenger trains seafarers at its Centre of Excellence, the WA Maritime Training Centre in Fremantle. There has been good co-operation between both institutions for several years, as Mercantile Marine Management has continuously been sending its cadets to its Australian partners for training.

The training programme starts with a pre sea course of 18 weeks in Galle where the young cadets receive training of the basic principles of seafaring, maintenance, safety requirements and leadership. Thereafter they will fulfil three contracts of nine month each as cadets. This period will be accompanied by a demanding interactive distance learning programm co-ordinated from Australia.

Having fulfilled both sea time and distance learning program the cadets will spend nine months of intensive training in Australia at the WA Maritime Training Centre. The completion of training will get them their Certificate of Competency. The first batch of Cadets for the July intake were selected last month. Mercantile Marine Management set up a challenging selection process to ensure that only candidates with the necessary abilities and the right attitude were selected.

They were closely monitored in their behaviour and their ability to take responsibility and handle certain tasks. Captain Robin Gray, TAFE Challengers Program Manager Maritime, who came from Australia to sit in the selection panel, was impressed by the spirit and enthusiasm of the young candidates.
