Back room tactics won't work Back room tactics like canvassing for the inclusion of certain individual players is back. This is a trend of very late. There appears to be a lot of misgivings about back room tactics being used to keep individual players in the national cricket team. It has been quite evident during the selection of the squad for the on-going Asia Cup tournament. It is not something new but one that was quite evident with a recent selection committee which found it difficult to pick teams when people of higher authority were also involved. They should condone such acts not encourage it. This sort of thing was unknown in the past and must be stopped. Cricket is a game that should be played on merit and such tactics can only demotivate the younger generation of players. Selections may not be perfect, but whatever decisions they take should be respected. There has been occasions in the past where even the greatest of players produced by Sri Lanka have been dropped for loss of form. But they have fought their way back with performances on the field. Aravinda de Silva, the greatest accumulator of runs for the country is a case in point. When he hung up his boots after the 2003 World Cup there could have been thousand pleas for him to remain in the game for another year or two but he stuck to his own guns. |
