News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Physical resources vital to enhance quality of education - Dinesh Hanwella group correspondent The Urban Development and Water Supply Minister and Deputy Minister of Education Dinesh Gunawardena said that although some people thought that physical resources such as buildings etc. were not essential to educate children they were a must to enhance the quality of education in schools. He was addressing a meeting at Hanwella Rajasinghe National School recently after inaugurating the 'Rajasinghe Theatre' built at a cost of Rs. 20 million. He said according to the present system of education, facilities and modern equipment were needed in schools in order to produce citizens to meet the demands of the future. Our teachers are committed to develop the creative talents of children in all fields of education including arts, culture and aesthetic aspects of education. Therefore art galleries and theatres help children to exhibit their inborn talents, he said. The Minister said that President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga had allocated sufficient funds for education. But the UNP when they were in power curtailed them resulting in a drawback in the education system during the recent past. However she has since re-allocated funds for schools and universities, he said. Former Minister Indika Gunawardena said he could obtain the sanction of the President to upgrade Hanwella Rajasinghe MMV to a national school. The Secretary of the Past Pupils Association and former WPC Minister, Mahesh Almeida said that over the years, Hanwella Rajasinghe Central College had gifted several intellectuals and scholars to the nation. The Principal H. S. K. Wijayatillaka made the welcome speech. |
