CNCI played major role in promoting local industries - PM

Sri Lanka's industrial revolution was sparked off by the former Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike during the 1970 era and it laid for foundation for many local entrepreneurs to prosper in business, said Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse who was the chief guest at the Ceylon National Chamber of Industries (CNCI) annual Achiever of Industrial Excellence awards at the Ceylon Continental Hotel. The media sponsor for the event was the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited.

The premier said that the then Minister of Industries Maithripala Senanayake too contributed in a big way to safeguard the interests of local industrialists. He said that the CNCI too had played a major role in promoting local industrialists.

The present government had identified the importance of the local industries and the small and medium sector (SME) as a key area for development and would support them. Over 40 percent of the local industrial output is from the SME sector while 36 percent is from this sector.

The Prime Minister said that the government will pay attention to infrastructure development and the key areas they are focusing is power generation, telecommunication roads network and information technology. "Rapid development in these areas would help the SME sector have better access to existing and new markets," he said.

In addition it would also help to lessen the gap between the Western Province which enjoys the highest per capita income and other provinces creating a level playing field.

The President of the CNCI Ranjith Hettiarachchi said that Sri Lanka has to compete with countries such as India, China and Thailand for survival and Sri Lanka has to more competitive. He said that the local agriculture sector has vast potential but had not developed like other countries. Sri Lanka had lost its global competitiveness from 59 to 64 and the new government would have to find a way to increase it to its previous position.

The CNCI awards ceremony received 79 applications including nearly 10 from the SAARC countries. Indo Stainless Fabtech (Pvt) limited and Multichemi Bangladesh (Pvt) Ltd, two local companies doing business overseas, won the Crystal and Silver awards in the 'Sri Lanka industry in SAARC county' category where a gold was not awarded.
