Lankan delegation to woo more Japanese tourists The Sri Lanka Tourist Board with representatives from 15 local travel and tourism companies will attend the JATA World Tourism Congress and Travel Fair 2004 in Tokyo, Japan from September 24 to 26. The delegation is expected to promote Sri Lanka to attract more Japanese tourists which consist of 18,000 arrivals in the country annually. The attempt is targeted to increase Japanese tourist arrivals to over 22,000. "We will promote Sri Lankan tea, Ayurveda and other attractions while creating major awareness in potential areas in Japan. Our delegation will have six stalls at the exhibition", said Ushan Edirisinghe of the Tourist Board. "We will also meet travel representatives of Fukuoka and Osaka provinces which are becoming potential areas to attract tourists. This is the first time that we are going out of Tokyo to promote Sri Lanka and our interaction in those two provinces would help expand to market our country. Osaka is the second largest tourist city in Japan", he said. "Japanese tourist arrivals have increased by 7 per cent during the first quarter of this year". We will further promote Sri Lanka in other provinces also", he said. With over 700 booths, the annual JATA World Travel Fair is Asia's largest travel trade and consumer travel exhibition. - (SP) |
