UK to help Nepal push ahead peace process KATHMANDU, Friday (PTI) Britain offered assistance to Nepal in initiating dialogue with Maoists and alleviating poverty. "The UK along with the international community, stands ready to help Nepal push ahead with a peace process," Prime Minister Tony Blair said in a message to his Nepalese counterpart Sher Bahadur Deuba. "We remain committed to help reduce violence and abuse on both sides of the conflict, maintain human security and alleviate poverty," Blair said, according to a British Embassy press statement. Lauding Deuba's efforts to forming a new multiparty government with a spectrum of political opinion, Blair said that this is a "promising step" towards resolution of the conflict in the Himalayan Kingdom. Meanwhile, the Maoists have said that they would not go for a ceasefire unless the government agrees to discuss their major demands of holding elections and drafting a new constitution. |
