Young Pushpakumara in 400m semis Sri Lanka's emerging young sprinter Manoj Pushpakumara did well to enter the semi-finals of men's 400m event at the IAAF Junior World Championships now in progress in Grosseto. Making his debut in the international arena's big league, Pushpakumara finished second in the first round heats and qualified to run in the semi-finals. Running in lane three in the first round heat five, Pushpakumara clocked 47.16 seconds to finish behind the winner of heat five - Serdar Tamac of Turkey (47.16). However in the first semi-final heat, Pushpakumara could secure only the fifth place, thus missed out a berth in the final. He was relatively slow in the final, than his performance in the first round, and returned a timing of only 47.6 second. This semi-final was won by American Lashawn Merriott in 45.84 seconds while Sudan's Nagmeldin Ali Abubakr (45.99) came second. (D.W.) |
