Morale boosting win b'desh

by Chris Dhambarage

Bangladesh fought back through their bowlers to register a morale boosting 116 run victory over Hong Kong in their Asia Cup limited overs cricket tournament group 'A' opening fixture played at the SSC grounds, Maitland Place yesterday.

After being put into bat and reduced to 221 for 9 from their 50 overs, Bangladesh hit back strongly to dismiss their opponents for just 105 runs in 45.2 overs.

Bangladesh were in danger of losing the game following an unimpressive batting performance from their top order. However their bowlers made amends with a tremendous effort on the field as they ran through the Hong Kong top order to make certain that there will be no contest at the end.

Bangladesh fully exploited their weak opponents through some hostile bowling with Tapash Baisya, Mushfiqur Rahman and Abdur Razak quite outstanding. Their modest score of 221 runs was converted into a matchwinning total with Hong Kong losing their top five batsmen for only 65 runs on the board.

Bangladesh were really concerned earlier as they failed to build up a good score on a decent batting track.

They lost too many wickets during the latter stages of the innings with the pressure mounting on them. The only bright spot where their batting is concerned was the innings of Javed Omar who stroked an elegant knock of 68.

The experienced opener held their middle order together at a vital stage of the innings facing 113 deliveries and stroking five boundaries.

His second wicket partnership of 85 runs with Habibul Bashar was a crucial one for Bangladesh who were looking for a solid start from their top order. Javed Omar rose to the occasion and played another superb innings before returning back to the pavilion at the fall of the fifth wicket and with the total on 145.

This was however an encouraging performance from the Hong Kong bowlers who stuck to their task despite performing in their first major international one day cricket tournament. Their bowlers did a marvellous job to contain the more experienced Bangladesh side with Illyas Gul capturing three wickets for 46 from his ten overs.

Najeeb Amar also sent down his ten overs quite economically after Afzal Haidar had struck early to restrict Bangladesh for only 32 runs within the first ten overs of the innings. Hong Kong certainly had a great chance at this stage of running through the Bangladesh top order but Javed Omar held his nerves and stood firm to complete a fighting half century.
