Technical training for more school leavers

The Ministry of Education has planned to develop and expand the ongoing programmes of the Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technical Education (SLIATE).

SLIATE, which was established in 1995 under a Parliamentary Act and caters to school leavers who have qualified at the GCE A/Level, and offers courses of study that are technical and technology oriented. Most students who qualify from SLIATE are readily employable.

At present 6,000 students are enrolled into eleven ATI and seven ATI section training institutes, which offer full time and part time courses of study.

The Ministry plans to expand the intake of students from 2005, increase financial allocations to the training institute and to provide the additional resources needed to build the capacity of SLIATE, to provide more opportunities for job-oriented training.
