Islandwide program under way to combat dengue Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse yesterday appealed for the cooperation of all towards the eradication of the dengue epidemic which has claimed 54 lives so far. More than 3,000 patients have been diagnosed with dengue. Prime Minister Rajapakse, who heads the National Health Council, announced that the Government would implement an islandwide dengue eradication campaign from July 23. Briefing the media at Temple Trees yesterday, the Prime Minister said urgent action was essential to save more lives and prevent the further spread of the deadly disease. All Government institutions, Provincial Councils, NGOs, community organisations, private institutions and the public will be involved in this effort. The Health Ministry will conduct awareness programmes on dengue prevention while anti-dengue programs will be held at village level. Householders will be told that keeping their houses and compounds clean is the most effective way to combat the dengue mosquito. Hospital sources say the epidemic could reach a higher intensity if rains prevail. |
