Japanese help for IDPs resettlement

The Japanese Government will provide Rs 23.2 million for the support of returnee community of the North and the East towards their resettlement. The Japanese Government's contribution is expected to aid the resettlement of over 400 families in seven villages in the Wanni and the East.

Harsha Kumara Navaratne, Chairman of the Sewalanka Foundation and M.S. Jayasinghe, Secretary, Ministry of Relief, Rehabilitation & Reconciliation will be signatories to this Memorandum of Understanding to be signed on July 19 at 2.30 p.m. at the Ministry Auditorium, 177, Galle Road, Colombo-3.

Japanese Ambassador, Akio Suda, and Embassy officials played a major role in providing this assistance towards the welfare of returnee community and their resettlement.

The project will be implemented through the Sewalanka Foundation in Sri Lanka for emergency rehabilitation of the returnee community towards rebuilding their lives and villages to provide a suitable and sustainable environment for returnees.

This would be a timely project to maintain the momentum of the resettlement of internally displaced persons in tandem with the de-mining projects in Vavuniya, Mannar and Trincomalee Districts.
