PM to visit India

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse will embark on his first overseas official visit this evening. He is flying to India on an invitation by the Indian Government.

"He had been invited by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh," an official at the Premier's office said adding that Rajapakse will be the first foreign Prime Minister to visit India on an invitation extended by the new Indian Government.

During his two day official visit, the Premier is scheduled to meet the newly elected Indian Premier Singh and key Cabinet Ministers.

This high level Sri Lankan delegation led by Premier Rajapakse comprises Minister of Trade and Consumer Affairs Jeyaraj Fernandopulle and Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

The delegation is scheduled to take up important bilateral issues with their counterparts with the aim of strengthening the long-standing relations between the two countries.

The Sri Lankan delegation also includes Secretary to the Prime Minister Lalith Weeratunga and advisor to the Premier Sunimal Fernando.

Premier Rajapakse who will be leaving Sri Lanka this evening is scheduled to be received by Indian Foreign Minister Natwar Singh upon his arrival at the New Delhi International Airport.
