NIC officials allegedly involved: CID probes massive NIC racket by Sarath Malalasekera The forging of National Identity Cards (NICs) is a serious threat to national security, top CID officials said yesterday. The CID team probing the Kollupitiya suicide bomb blast had unearthed evidence pointing to the involvement of Department of Registration of Persons employees in this racket. The CID made this observation in the light of revelations that the woman suicide bomber who blew herself at the Kollupitiya Police station recently had a forged National ID. Investigations directed by CID DIG Lionel Gunatilleke and conducted by Senior SP D.S.Y. Samaratunge revealed that several employees at the Department of Registration of Persons are alleged to have been involved in the issuing of forged identity cards at exorbitant prices. The CID arrested four suspects and produced them before the Colombo Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Ms. Sarojini Kusala Weerawardena. On an application by Inspector Shani Abeysekera of the CID the Judge remanded the four suspects till July 19. They are Mohamed A. Refideen of Maradana, K. Kularathna Fernando of Mount Lavinia, Mohamed Mubrak Mohamed Rizwaan of Panadura and Indrajith Nandana Karunanayake of Veyangoda. The four suspects who were produced before court are alleged to have issued a forged national identity card to the LTTE woman suicide bomber. Inspector Abeysekera objected to the suspects being released on bail and said that the investigations into the matter is not over yet and if the suspects were released on bail they would interfere with the ongoing investigations. It has been revealed that the woman suicide bomber Thavarasa Jeyarani (20), a resident of Jaffna, had obtained employment as a housemaid in a Colombo house after producing her forged ID card. She has used the card to gain access to many places. She was assigned to assassinate Eelam People's Democratic Party leader and Minister Douglas Devananda. When she failed to target the minister, she exploded the bomb at the Kollupitiya police station as police officers tried to search her. Four policemen were killed. |
