Ayurveda therapy fast becoming a main attraction

by Shirajiv Sirimane in Beruwela

Ayurveda is an Arian kind of treatment and was introduced to Sri Lanka centuries ago with Buddhism. During that time a person going for treatment had to even take his horoscope.

Ayurveda, which was a traditional way of healing that contribution of mental and physical comfort, was revived nearly four decades ago in Sri Lanka by entrepreneur Sudanapala Rodrigo in Beruwela. The year 1968 was the time that tourism was being introduced to Sri Lanka and the family took a bold decision in combining the concept of vacation with that of revitalization and healing.

The family built Barberyn Reef hotel overlooking the picturesque Beruwela reef and he was a laughing stock during the time. "Introducing Ayurveda at a time when it was completely ignored was a bold move by my father as no one wanted to rub sticky oil on their bodies or waste a few days trapped in one location.

The smell and the taste of some of the Ayurveda medicine and the distrust people had for this kind of treatment was a challenge for my father," recalled the Managing Director of the hotel Manick Rodrigo.

However with the times changing the demand for Ayurveda medicine increased and many hotels took Barberyn Reef hotel as the model to introduce this kind on medicine, which is now a way of life. Now there are many hotels particularly built for this Ayurveda treatment and today it is a very laborious task to find a hotel, which does not offer this treatment.

"Ayurveda is a serious business since it makes a person heal by giving mental strength and balance. A person becomes sick only if his or her body is imbalanced," he said. Manick representing the second generation said that they have university-qualified doctors who would identify any sickness and prescribe treatment. This is very popular among the Germans, English and there is a new younger generation patronising Ayurveda from Japan.

Today Ayurveda is mixed with local medicine to fulfil the present demand.
