News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | All party advisory council to be set up An All Party Advisory Council is to be set up to continue peace talks in a transparent manner. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting on Tuesday, chaired by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. Members of this Council will be from the political parties having their representatives in Parliament. SLFP General Secretary and Minister Maithripala Sirisena said the meeting held to find ways and means to resume peace talks with the LTTE arrived at the decision to set up the All Party Advisory Council with the consent of leaders of political parties in the Freedom Alliance. The representatives of the National Peace Secretariat also had attended the meeting. The Minister added : "It is important to seek the assistance of the main political parties representing Parliament. This Advisory Council is totally different from that of the All Party Conference which was highlighted in several newspapers on July 15." The Advisory Council will take decisions on the continuation of the peace process under the directions of the President, the Minister added. |
