Mobilisation of all resources necessary to control dengue by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi The National Health Council chaired by Premier Mahinda Rajapakse yesterday held extensive discussions and focused its highest attention on eradicating dengue. The Council which met after a lapse of nearly one decade was convened by Premier Rajapakse to take fast action to control the spreading of dengue and Thalassaemia and several other diseases. "Mobilisation of all resources is necessary to fight against dengue," the Premier had stressed at the discussion while pledging to undertake a high level campaign to eradicate dengue which has claimed 53 lives so far this year. Council chaired by the Prime Minister with Health Minister as its Secretary will co-ordinate and guide all activities of relevant ministries concerning national health issues. At yesterday's meeting, the Council had also paid its attention on implementing the Cabinet decision to conduct a wide campaign at all work-places on July 23 against dengue and carry out cleaning programs countrywide. The participation of all sections of the society including school children will be obtained in this regard. Last week, Premier Rajapakse appealed to all citizens to extend their support to arrest the alarming trend of dengue. "Attempts to control dengue will be a success if it receives the support and participation of every single citizen," the Premier said stressing the need for accelerating the nation wide dengue control programs. The Prime Minister's appeal was directed to all religious leaders, all State and private sector institutions especially educational institutes including schools, local authorities and non-governmental organisations, youth clubs, welfare societies and to all political parties. The Premier's appeal follows the repeated warnings by Health Authorities that the dengue epidemic could hit a peak during this month owing to the poor response from the public towards the dengue eradication program, including keeping the environment clean. |
