by Manjula Fernando The University Grants Commission expressed optimism yesterday that admissions for next year will not be postponed despite the delay in conducting the GCE Advanced Level examination this year. UGC Vice Chairman Prof. R.L. Ratnayake said arrangements have already been made to commence admitting the 2004/2005 batch for all universities from late December. Admissions will be concluded by the first week of January next year, excluding the Colombo Arts and the Sri Jayawardenapura Management Faculties. The two faculties will fall behind schedule due to internal problems, Prof. Ratnayake said. "The Examinations Commissioner has conveyed that the 2004 AL results could be released by August 10 and our time table has been prepared accordingly," the Vice Chairman said. Applications for admission will be called from GCE A/L qualified students by the UGC from August 11 to September 3. The Student Handbook on Admissions will be distributed in bookshops islandwide by August 10."We expect to release the Z-scores by December 10," the UGC Vice Chairman added. According to the UGC, the Jaffna university which will start their admissions on December 22 will be the first to admit students for next year. "If all goes well all Medical and Engineering faculties could be opened for the new batch by the first week of January." The Colombo University has informed they were unable to admit new students for its Arts Faculty within the scheduled time due to problems concerning accommodation and staff shortages. "At present the Colombo Arts faculty is accommodating two double batches to clear its backlog. The authorities are negotiating a solution to provide a special payment for freshers to find their own accommodation. Admissions are expected to be delayed until at least March next year," he said. Admission dates for new batches to Sri Jayawardhanapura Management faculty is yet to be finalised. "We are at the moment focusing on re-opening the university and continuing the stalled examinations." The postponed convocation of the J'pura university has tentatively been fixed for July 25 and 26. The GCE AL examination, usually held in April was postponed for May in view of the 2004 Parliamentary Election. |
