by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi The Health Services Trade Union Alliance (HSTUA) yesterday called off its fast unto death campaign following discussions with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse who intervened to resolve health sector salary anomalies. The HSTUA threatened the fast unto death from yesterday opposite the Health Ministry to force authorities to resolve health sector salary anomalies. Alliance spokesman Ravi Kumudesh said they were satisfied with Prime Minister Rajapakse's efforts to resolve the crisis by finding solutions to two of their main demands. He said the Prime Minister intervened to settle salary anomalies of provincial health institution employees except for four categories - clerk, store keeper, driver and peon. The HSTUA's main demand was granting the recent salary increase to casual and substitute labourers. "At the discussion, it was also agreed to take steps to make the increased payment for casual and substitute labourers," he added. While appreciating the Prime Minister's gesture to resolve this crisis, Kumudesh lamented that certain authorities did not implement recommendations and instructions of the Prime Minister causing a crisis. The discussion between HSTUA and the Prime Minister was held in the morning. Health Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, Provincial Governors and Treasury officials were present. The Alliance claimed that nearly 50,000 employees in health institutions under Provincial Councils had not yet been granted the approved salary increase. However, Prime Minister Rajapakse had pointed out that salary increases in the health sector should not lead to a crisis in the whole Government sector. |
