WNS sets up BPO operations

WNS, one of the largest third party Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) companies in India set up its back office operation at HNB Towers in Colombo making Sri Lanka becoming the latest destination for British companies outsourcing their operations overseas.

The venture with an initial investment of over US S 2 million has already commenced operations with over 35 personnel and would offer another 1,000 job opportunities by the end of next year under its expansion program.

Managing Director of WNS Sri Lanka Dushan Soza told the Daily News that the availability of highly qualified English speaking staff with specific expertise in professional services such as Accountancy and Commercial Law have been positive factors to expand its operations out of India.

"We have also sent 20 Sri Lankan personnel to UK for further training and would train others to successfully spearhead our operations in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka's ICT infrastructure should be further developed to facilitate any BPO ventures in the country and such effort would have positive impact to further expand its presence in the country", Soza said.

He said the WAN management views Sri Lanka as a good business destination and there is a tranche of people who are very well educated and widely travelled. They have an international outlook and a good work ethic." Executive Chairman of WNS Global Services David Tibble in a recently report said that its Sri Lankan staff are being trained in Britain or possess internationally accepted legal or accountancy qualifications.

Tibble said opportunities in Sri Lanka would appeal to a limited number of British firms, which were keen to improve productivity while not sacrificing service standards.

"The issue for British companies is how they cope with the growing customer service requirements when the British population is not growing," he said.

"The only way for businesses to do this realistically is to use a combination of domestic and offshore operations", he said.

"WNS' Indian clients include Norwich Union, WPP, Royal Sun Alliance and British Airways. BA established WNS in 1996 to handle some of its ticket processing and other data management functions.

It sold the business to venture capital firm Warburg Pincus in 2000 although it retained a 30% stake. India accounts for approximately 90% of the offshore business process outsourcing industry, employing more than 100,000 people.
