Tilak Karunaratne quits all posts in JHU

by Chamikara Weerasinghe

Former MP Tilak Karunaratne yesterday disclosed that he had stepped down from the post of General Secretary of the Jathika Hela Urumaya and had relinquished all his official duties in the JHU. He said his decision was chiefly prompted by certain disagreements with the MP monks.

"There is no ill-will meant. I felt it was necessary," Karunaratne said.

Asked why he decided to give up his post, Karunaratne said he just wished to be a member. He had just returned from a trip abroad with his family. Asked whether he was considering a switch in his political affiliations, Karunaratne replied in the negative saying he was very much interested in the welfare of the country and the nation.

Meanwhile, close associates of the former JHU Secretary revealed that Karunaratne had decided to step down from his post over differences with the JHU monks who sources revealed tended to become inflexible. Tilak Karunaratne also said there was a rumour that he was about to join the United National Party. He wondered who was behind these rumours.

Asked whether there was an invitation from the UNP to join them, he answered in the negative, "there was no such thing that I was going to join the UNP."
