German FM here on Saturday German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer will arrive in Sri Lanka on July 17 for a three-day official visit. Fischer's visit will strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries. He will hold talks with President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse, Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe. These talks will focus on bilateral ties, trade, tourism and the peace process in Sri Lanka. Maldivian MPs call on Kadirgamar A group of newly elected Members of the Maldivian Parliament called on Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar last Saturday and presented their views on the current developments including constitutional reforms in the Maldives. They stressed the need for the establishment of a multi-party democracy in their country. The Maldivian Members of Parliament stated that their movement was peaceful and hoped to achieve reform of their political institutions by means of persuasion and expressions of popular support. Doctors treating her have recommended an urgent heart surgery to save her life. The surgery to be performed at the Sri Jayawardenepura hospital is estimated to cost Rs. 150,000. Her father J. Jesudasan says the President's Fund has agreed to meet part of the cost by contributing Rs. 100,000. He says being an estate worker he in not in a position to foot the balance cost. He requests philanthropists and the general public to assist his daughter's cause by sending whatever financial contributions possible to help expedite the surgery and save the child's life. All contributions should be remitted to Account No. 1-030119-9 at the Bank of Ceylon, Haputale Branch. |
