Lotus and tea pluckers

by Prasad Abu Bakr

A mother and daughter combination is due to show their work at the Lionel Wendt Gallery from July 17 to 19. Chira and Niloo Gunasekara are both engrossed in their work as artists in their own right without probably being influenced or involved in each others creative exercise.

Chiranthi Gunasekara the mother has had her educational background during her younger days with a leading artist looming large in the background in the form of Swanee Jayawardena one of Sri Lanka's foremost artists who used her inspiration to produce some of the most eye catching batik collection which still holds a frontline presence for their creative designs and flamboyant colour.

A series from Chiranthi’s work

For Chiranthi this association may have served as a fine start to her inclination towards continuing to paint, not necessarily as a profession but even as an inspirational exercise to relax away from her daily chores.

A one time member of the 43rd group Chiranthi who has spent most of her younger days on a tea plantation has naturally used tea pluckers and other estate related fauna and flora as a major part of subjects to her work in this exhibition together with her daughter Niloo (they have exhibited together twice before, once in 1987 and later in 1998).

Niloo influenced by lotus

Niloo in fact has been rather an active member in the contemporary field of arts. She has been featured at many exhibitions organised by the George Keyt Foundation and has also been an active member of their artist camps held recently.

Niloo who has had two solo exhibitions of her own on two earlier occasions is concentrating on lotus as the main object of her work at this exhibition. The work as a whole though an attempt by a mother and daughter duo succeeds in keeping their individual identities apart which is what makes this exhibition an interesting event to observe.
