Nepali Maoists willing to initiate peace talks in UN presence KATHMANDU, Friday (PTI) Maoist rebels in Nepal have expressed readiness to initiate peace talks in cooperation and presence of the United Nations, but warned that any government formed as the continuation of "conspiracies" can never lead to a peaceful and forward-looking solution to the crisis the country is facing. "We are serious about our responsibility towards the people and the country and express our readiness for initiating peace talks in cooperation and presence of the United Nations," President of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist), Prachanda alias Pushpakamal Dahal, said in a statement. "We firmly believe that independent verdict of the sovereign people is the only peaceful political solution to the present state of civil war," the Maoist leader said, adding that the rebels have moved forward "a minimum proposal of a conference involving all sides, an interim government and a constituent assembly." Criticising the decision by Nepal Communist Party-UML (CPN-UML) to join the coalition led by Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, the statement said "the CPN-UML has acted as a servant of the feudal class and sabotaged against the democratic aspirations of the Nepalese people." |
