Flexible approach from Athaullah

by P. Krishnaswamy

With the Nordic peace facilators making renewed efforts to kickstart the stalled negotiatory process and anticipations among political circles that the peace process will resume shortly, Minister of Infrastructure Development in the Eastern Province, A. L. M. Athaullah, has expressed a more flexible approach on the issue of Muslims participation at the negotiations.

Athaullah has stated that the Muslims participation as a third party at the peace talks being demanded by other major Muslim political parties, including the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) led by Digamadulla MP and former Minister Rauff Hakeem, was not necessary.

Simultaneously as holding talks with the LTTE, the Government should talk with the Muslims' representatives to grant their aspirations and rights, he stated.

"It is the Government that can constitutionally and legally grant the just rights and aspirations of either a region, a community or an ethnic group and, therefore, it is desirable for the Government to talk separately with the different minority communities to ascertain their stance," he stated.
