NLB support for Sri Lak meet The Sri Lak Athletic Club is to conduct its 33rd annual sports meet today and tomorrow at Sugathadasa Stadium commencing at 1.30 p.m. each day Laksman de Alwis spokesman for Sri Lak AC said the National Lotteries Board has come forward to sponsor the meet. This he said was a good signal to prove the sports get the needed support for the development of sports even at club level. He further added that Sri Lak AC has spread its branches to 15 districts in the island. This club reached these district with the main intention of helping the junior level athletes to reach greater heights. This project has borne good results" he said. This year's meet has attracted over 1500 athletes from all these districts from age group U-13, 15, 17, 19 and men and women. He said there in also a special invitation 4x400 m event to be conducted for clubs. These details were disclosed at a press briefing held at Athletic Association auditorium on Wednesday attended by General Manager of National Lotteries Board Ms. Karunaratne and Asoka Vithana Marketing Manager (NLB). Karunaratne addressing the media said that "Sri Lak AC which is in existence for thirty three years has done yeoman service to improve the standard of athletics in outstations. The club has paved the way for young one's to come to lime light. Our organisation was involved with swimming before this, but we thought that it is important to help sport that gives the opportunity to all in the country. That is the reason why we joined hands with Sri Lak AC he told the gathering he further said that organisation hopes to continue this partnership for the future too. General Manager NLB will be the chief guest on the final day and will give away the awards. |
