SLBFE bares Korean job racket

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) has busted a racket where a group of unscrupulous persons had extorted money from several individuals promising jobs in South Korea.

The victims of this racket are mostly young men and women from Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Badulla, Galle and Matara.

Chairman, SLBFE Karunasena Hettiarachchi told the Daily News yesterday that the money extortion racket has been conducted for the past three weeks. The bogus job agents had posed as authorised job agents registered with the Bureau.

He said this came to light a few days ago. No individuals or job agents have been appointed to deal with the Korean job program, since all allocated jobs will be granted to Lankan workers only through the Bureau.

"We have already made arrangements to place advertisements in newspapers, giving details about vacancies in South Korea. Persons will be selected on merit," Hettiarachchi said.

He said the selection of workers will be carried out by authorised officers appointed by the Sri Lankan and Korean Governments.

"After a careful study, all selected applicants will be informed and will have to do their financial transactions with the bank approved by the Bureau," he said.

Hettiarachchi urged the public to be vigilant about the so-called job agents. Any suspicious activity can be reported to police or the SLBFE Head Office in Colombo on 94-11-2584770 or 94-11-2501743.
