Yan Oya development projet under way soon by Nihal P. Abeysinghe Work on the Yan Oya Development Project, which will benefit around 60,000 farmer families in the North Central and Eastern Provinces will commence soon, Community Development Deputy Minister S.M. Chandrasena said. Under this project, 6,000 acres of uncultivated wetland and around 1,000 acres of paddy land neglected due to the severe lack of water will be brought under cultivation. The Project will also ensure a regular supply of water to 25 tanks in the area which had completely dried up during the recent drought. Chandrasena said President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga had agreed to release half of the Rs. 12 million estimated cost of the project. The balance will be met by the River Basin Development Ministry and the North Central Provincial Council with River Basin Development and Rajarata Development Minister Maithripala Sirisena's support. The Yan Oya which begins at Sirigiya has a full complement of water throughout the year. The Kurulu Oya fed by Yan Oya, irrigates only around 1,000 acres of paddy land, while the excess water is released to the sea from Pulmuddai. The Deputy Minister said under the project, the excess water will be diverted to Horowpathana via Ellepotha, Nambakada and Wagollakada to enable farmer families in river basin areas to irrigate paddy lands during the Yala and Maha seasons. |
