Plant trees, Fowzie tells forestry extension officers by Florence Wickramage Ninety three Forestry Extension Officers who received letters of appointments yesterday were requested by Environment and Natural Resources Minister A.H.M. Fowzie to plant 10,000 trees each to assist the Government in its tree planting drive. He also pledged them financial assistance to support their nurseries. Stating that just as cutting down trees illegally was a theft, public officers stealing time from their duty hours was also a theft, Fowzie cautioned the new recruits to commit themselves to work honestly for the country. Fowzie promised the new appointees he would seek Cabinet approval to make their new 10 year contract-basis, appointments permanent. Forestry Conservator General Sarath Fernando said the new appointees absorbed into the Department's cadre will be posted to Regional Forestry offices in their own home areas. Fernando said a comprehensive Master Forestry Plan was drawn up in 1995 and the Forestry Extension Service was initiated 20 years ago. Environment and Natural Resources Ministry Secretary Dharmasena Dissanayake also spoke. Forestry Department's Officer in charge of Personnel Management Sumana Premaratne delivered the vote of thanks. |
