Korean aid for Jaffna Technical College by Manjula Fernando The Jaffna Technical College will be upgraded to a fully fledged Institute of Technology with US $ 2.38 million funding from the Korean Government. The project to be implemented shortly received Cabinet approval this week, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Mangala Samaraweera said. Skills Development, Vocational and Technical Education Minister Piyasena Gamage presented the proposal to the Cabinet, presided over by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga this week. "The Jaffna Technical College established in 1959 is the only state run institute in the district which provides recognised training in the field of technology, with an annual intake of over 1,000 students," Minister Samaraweera said. "It offers 21 certificate courses covering general technical subjects and once the upgrading is over, new courses in IT, airconditioning and refrigeration, building construction, gem cutting and jewellery designing will be added," he said. According to the Minister, the uncertain situation in the area due to the ethnic conflict has prevented development of the college. Therefore upgrading its infrastructure with new inputs to laboratories and class rooms is essential. The initial proposal to elevate the technical college to an Institute of Technology was made by former Tertiary Education and Training Minister Kabir Hasheem. Korean Ambassador Lim Jae Hong met Minister Gamage at the Ministry recently where he promised to expedite the US $ 7 million funding for Jaffna Technical College improvement project. The funding will be made under Korean technical cooperation assistance. |
