Cinema manager in troubled waters

Special invitees including members of the media who had gathered at the Cine City, Maradana, for a special press screening of Satyajith Maitipe's Boradiya Pokuna (Troubled Waters) yesterday were in for a rude shock when police swooped down and arrested the manager.

Police said they received a tip-off that the cinema was organising a public screening of a movie on a Poya Day, which is an offence. However, the management explained that it was not a public screening, but only a private showing of a future release for select invitees.

Some of those in the audience informed Culture and National Heritage Minister Vijitha Herath of the police action. He intervened immediately and secured the release of the cinema hall manager, after explaining the facts to the police. The film was screened later.
