Customs officer escapes murder bid

by Asanga Warnakulasuriya

A three member gang had allegedly attempted to murder Customs Superintendent Athula Lankadewa who is inquiring into a massive gold coin scam, Maharagama Police said.

This gold coin scam is said to be linked to a popular pyramid scheme operating islandwide.

According to Police, the Superintendent in line with the investigations had ordered a gold coin consignment from Singapore to be kept in Customs custody for further inquiry.

Police said yesterday that the Customs Superintendent returning after work had been followed by three unidentified suspects up to his home at Wattagedara where one of the suspects had pulled out a revolver. The Customs officer had managed to escape unharmed, Police said.

The Superintendent had asked for police protection stating that his life is in danger. Maharagama Police are investigating.
