South Asian Sailing Regatta from July 2 to 4

by Richard Dwight

Sailing in the island will receive the much needed boost, and will as well go to hold the interest of the enthusiasts and followers of the sport - when the South Asian Triangular Sailing Regatta involving the top most countries in the region India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka takes place on the waters of the Bolgoda Lake from Friday July 2 to Sunday July 4.

This sailing or Yachting Regatta sponsored by Ceylon Cold Stores (CES) the makers of the drink 'Bitter Lemon' is being a much looked forward to triangular event, fraught with Significance since it is being revived after a lapse of 24 years.

This healthy contest between the three countries had its origin in Trincomalee in 1970. It was held last in Pakistan in 1978, in Sri Lanka in 1979 and in India in 1981.

The Regatta could not be held in the intervening years, for the reason that there prevailed unrest and unsettled conditions, coincidentally in all three countries.

This tenth Regatta is being organised by the Yachting Association of Sri Lanka (YASL) with the concurrence of Ceylon Motor Yacht Club (CMYC), and in a sense will serve as a fore runner to the holding of the World Sailing Championship in the year 2005.

A significant feature of this Regatta will be the introduction for the first time junior Sailors between the ages of 9-15 participating in their optimist class single-handed youth boats in a series of separate team races for the 'SAYR' Junior Trophy.

The competition for the Seniors involves a series of short races between the teams, each Sailing three international class dinghies. Six identical enterprise dinghies have been provided for the purpose by the Sri Lanka Navy Sailing Club, whose members play a prominent role in the Sri Lanka team.

The country coming out on top will be awarded 'SAYR" Senior Trophy. These details were made known to the media at a briefing held at the Trans Asia Hotel by Media Co-ordinator Hans O. Swendson and President YASL Ananda Wimaladharma.

The Director CCS Jit Guneratne on handing over the sponsorship cheque said that Elephant House and John Keells Holdings were honoured to be associated with the event and happy to support YASL in reviving this Regatta after 23 years.

He explained that this was an extension to their support to sporting activities in the country, where with peace much more could be done to strengthen the bonds between us.

According to Sailing Stalwart, Lalin Jirasingha and Commodore CMYC, Joseph Kenny, the Indian and Pakistan teams arrive on Thursday, July 1 and thereafter a series of races will be held for both Juniors and Seniors of the 3 countries from July 2 to July 4, commencing at 10.00 a.m. and going well into the afternoon each day.
