34 NGO vehicles destroyed in Nallur

by Ranil Wijayapala

Thirty four vehicles belonging to the HALO Trust, a Non Governmental Organisation engaged in de-mining in the Jaffna peninsula, were destroyed by 20 unidentified men early yesterday while the vehicles were parked at the Nallur parking yard, defence sources told the Daily News yesterday.

Five of the vehicles - three Canters and two jeeps were burnt to ashes by the men who stormed into the parking yard of the HALO Trust, the sources added.

The men had also assaulted four security guards before they fired at them, the sources said.

Apart from the five vehicles reduced to ashes, 28 other vehicles at the parking yard had been partly or completely damaged.

According to the HALO Trust, the total damage caused to their vehicles had been estimated at Rs. 1.2 billion, the sources added.

S. Selvarasa, 51, a security guard at the vehicle park had been admitted to Jaffna hospital after being assaulted by the attackers, sources added.

Another employee attached to the HALO Trust on his way to the work place had also been assaulted by the unidentified men. Security Forces, on being informed of the incident, had provided security at the location.

Jaffna Police are investigating.

The incident had taken place amidst agitation campaigns by civilian organisations in the Jaffna peninsula urging the authorities to take steps to expedite the de-mining process in the peninsula.
