Solution to ethnic crisis vital for prosperity - US Envoy by Geoff Wijesinghe US Ambassador Jefferey Lunstead at a round table conference with editors of national newspapers and senior journalists, said yesterday that the 20 donor nations were pressurising both the Sri Lankan Government and the LTTE to forge a peaceful settlement of the ethnic conflict which had beset this country for the last two decades. He said that the settlement of this problem will be a showcase to the world. Sri Lanka was a wonderful country with great potential for investment but the one big bugbear was the unsettled security situation caused by the North East conflict. He said that this stalemate could not be allowed to go on and there has to be a solution. In response to questions regarding the Free Trade Agreement, he said it was a possibility but could be a long drawn arrangement. Ambassador Lunstead said that the US and Sri Lanka will be soon signing a bilateral tax treaty which would be beneficial to both countries. |
