UNP condemns police action

by Ariyaratne Ganegoda

The UNP repulsively condemns the action by ASP Srinath Vidisinghe to arrest former Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayake, when the proper arrest of a person should be made on a Court order obtained after making relevant submissions, Professor G. L. Peiris told a media conference at the Opposition Leader's office in Colombo yesterday.

Explaining the circumstances, Professor Peiris said on June 23 evening, ASP Vidisinghe had gone to Karunanayake's house and after tapping on his shoulder announced that he was under arrest.

When MP Karunanayake's senior lawyer Arulpragasam demanded to know the reason for the arrest, ASP Vidisinghe made no response nor showed any warrant of arrest, he said.

He said that this is a breach of Parliamentary Privileges and that legal action would be taken against the police officers responsible for this illegal act.

He said on inquiries made from IGP Indra de Silva and the Ministry Secretary Cyril Herath, he found they knew nothing about this and that the Magistrate Court had refused an application for warrant against Karunanayake on June 24.

Kalutara District MP Rajitha Senaratne told the media that the ASP's attempt to arrest Karunanayaka was ultra vires and he complained to Speaker W. J. M. Lokubandara and Ranjith Abeysuriya PC, the Chairman of the National Police Commission.

He said when the application for a warrant against Karunanayake was taken up in the Magistrate's Court on June 24, UPFA National List MP Mervyn Silva was seated next to him.

Gampaha district MP John Amaratunga also spoke. UNP Acting Secretary Milroy Perera was also present.
