by Manjula Fernando and Ranil Wijayapala The Government on Wednesday approved a Cabinet paper submitted by Transport Minister Felix Perera to revoke the Railways Authority Act in keeping with one of its key election promises. Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Mangala Samaraweera said the Cabinet which met on Wednesday, chaired by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse, decided to improve the Railways Department to make it a more efficient service. The former regime's arrangement to convert the Railways Department into an Authority, which attracted much criticism by railway workers and the public, is to be done away with, the Minister said. He said the Government will also look into expanding the railways' goods transport sector. The Cabinet also approved Rs. 90 million out of the Indian Credit Line to repair hundreds of usable buses discarded in depots. Some of the buses that gather rust inside depots have been discarded after only about four to six years in service. Many can be used after minor repairs, the Minister said. |
