by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi Two persons were killed on the spot when a four storey building in the heart of Fort collapsed in the wee hours of yesterday. Thirteen others with injuries were pulled out of the rubble of the collapsed building in Fourth Cross Street, Pettah, which is still under construction. The mishap had taken place around 4.50 a.m. "One injured person is at the Intensive Care Unit while others are at the casualty wards," Colombo National Hospital's Deputy Director (Accident Service) Dr. Anil Jasinghe told the Daily News. He said 15 people were rushed to the hospital and two succumbed to their injuries. The impact of the collapse damaged two adjoining buildings. Police said the two dead, Thangarajah and Rengasami, worked at a nearby hotel. Police and people around the area had rushed the injured to hospital. Hotel and construction site workers were among the injured. Masons and labourers at the site who were injured were residents from Ambalangoda, police said. Dr. Jasinghe said some casualties had sustained burn injuries. Initial investigations revealed that the building had been constructed without following proper technical guidance. "The concrete pillars had not been built according to proper construction techniques and the building collapsed as the pillars had not been able to bear the weight of the concrete slabs," an official said. Further investigations are being conducted by Fort Police OIC CI Ananda Liyanapathirana, under the directions of ASP Premalal Ranagala and Colombo district SSP D.P.L. Dissanayake. |
