| PC candidate granted bail by Sarath Malalasekera Thilak Ratna Rajapaksa, a candidate at the forthcoming provincial council Elections, on Tuesday surrendered before the Colombo Additional Magistrate Miss Amalee Ranaweera through his lawyer Ms. Indika Hiromani. The Magistrate released Rajapaksa on bail on a bond of Rs.25,000 and directed him to appear in court on September 6. Earlier, the Magistrate issued a warrant for the arrest of Thilak Ratna Rajapaksa when he was not present in court when the case was called on Monday. Rajapaksa and eleven others who are alleged to have violated the Election Laws were earlier directed to appear before the Welikada Police and assist in their investigations by making statements within next 48 hours. The 11 other candidates are Sisira Wanniarachchi, Duminda Silva, Chandrasiri Chitra Dias and Dilan Dilruk Weerasekera all of the UNP. Gamini Tillekesiri, Chinthana Mutukumarana, Mahinda Kuruvita, Chandrasiri Ganangala, Sarath Pathirana, Priyanka Kotalawela of the JVP and D.A.D. Sirima, an Independent candidate. After the submissions by the Counsel and the Police the Magistrate directed the candidates to sign a bond of Rs.25,000 each and directed them to appear before court on September 6, 2004. The Magistrate also directed the candidates not to violate the Election Laws and paste posters in public places. Western Province South DIG K.P.P. Pathirana directing investigations conducted by Nugegoda Senior SP Dayananda Bandara and assisted by Chief inspector R.L. Chandrasiri, OIC, Welikada Police Vernon Tillekeratne, Nalin Ladduwahetty, U.L.G.Bandara and Ranjith Caldera appeared for the candidates. |
