Explosives found in Grandpass

The Grandpass Police in the early hours on Wednesday recovered eight kilos of C 4 explosives stored in a gunny bag at a bus stand near Grandpass.

The detection was made by a Police team led by Inspector Anuradha Mahindrasiri, OIC, Crimes, Grandpass police while they were on a foot patrol. Out of eight kilos, one and half kilos were found packed in a suicide jacket, the police said.

Investigations directed by Colombo DIG Sirisena Herath revealed that a young person who was wearing a black trouser and a T shirt had left the gunny bag containing the explosives at the bus stand. The Police had summoned the Army bomb disposal squad and defused the explosives, the Colombo DIG said.

The investigators have found the word "Forward" written in Tamil on the bag with a number 1005. Chief Inspector D. S. Jayasinghe OIC, Grandpass police is assisting in investigations. This is the second such detection within three weeks.
