Peiris yesterday referring to the lead story in Thursday's Daily News titled 'Lands Minister orders full probe into GL's alleged land grab' stated he will take legal action against the State electronic and print media used to sling mud on Ministers and MPs of the previous Government. The United People's Freedom Alliance Government having failed to even produce a systematic plan to fulfil its election pledges has now started a mud slinging campaign against Ministers and MPs of the previous Government. The state media is used for this, he told a media briefing at the Opposition Leader's Office in Colombo. Answering the media on the issue of the alleged land deal, Prof. Peiris said the extent of land referred to in the report is a part of the 999 acre of land owned by his great grandfather, M. A. Perera, a property, his ancestors inherited over four generations and from which his mother received a share when she married in 1920. These lands were acquired by the Land Reforms Commission and compensation was paid. On my grand mother's demise 25 acres were devolved on my wife," he said. "Is it wrong for us to receive our own great grandfather's property?" queried Prof. Peiris. Kalutara District UNP MP Rajitha Senaratne, Colombo District MP Bandula Gunawardena and Ravindra Randeniya were also present at the press briefing. |
