News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Govt. to introduce anti conversion laws shortly by Chamikara Weerasinghe Information and Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera said yesterday that the Cabinet approved anti conversion Bill to be presented to Parliament shortly. The new bill is aimed at eliminating proselytizing of Buddhists to other religions, as is envisaged in the Buddhist Commission Report. The Buddhist Commission Report was prepared by a special committee appointed by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to submit recommendations necessary to protect the Buddha Sasana, he said. "The UPFA Government had undertaken the task to enact the recommendations in the report," the Minister stated. The Draft concerning the appointment of a Supreme Sangha Council and anti-conversion laws are now with the Legal Draughtsman, he said. |
