by Ranil Wijayapala The Government has decided to restructure the country's revenue collecting institutes for efficient tax collection to increase Government revenue instead of setting up the proposed Revenue Authority amalgamating the Inland Revenue, Customs and Excise Departments, Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama told the Cabinet press briefing yesterday. He said that the lowest revenue collection of the country was reported last year under the UNF Government and was due to political interference in tax collection. "The Government's revenue went down due to tax waivers and amnesties given to the elite class," the Minister added. Dr. Amunugama said the Government has to increase revenue collection to raise funds for development work. "We can spend money for the development of the country if we find ways to increase our revenue," he said. The Minister said revenue collection at the Inland Revenue Department, Customs Department and the Excise Department have increased during the last two months. |
